KEY STAGE 1

SATS take place in year 2 (at the end of infants) throughout May. Each child is teacher assessed in Reading, Writing (including spelling and handwriting), Maths (including number, shape, space and measurement) and science. Your child's class teacher will set short exercises in English and Maths to determine what level of ability your child is considered to be.

KEY STAGE 2
SATS take place in the second week in May and are far more formal than Key Stage 1. This can be more stressful for children. The tests which are taken in Year 6 cover the three core subjects of English, Maths, and Science. Very bright children can be assessed by teachers to see if they can go onto higher levels. The papers are sent away to be marked, with results being available before your child leaves primary school in July.

KEY STAGE 3
SATS take place in May and are once again formal test/exams. The exams cover work done in English, Maths, and Science during years 7 to 9. These exams are sometimes used to decide which GCSE set your child will be placed in. Level 8 is only available in Maths.

The word "Dyslexia" comes from the Greek and means 'difficulty with words'. It may also be defined as having a reading IQ below a learning IQ.

According to government figures, 17% of 11 year olds in the UK fail to reach the required standards in reading tests and has recommended that methods such as "synthetic phonics", breaking the word down into sounds, need to be adopted.


Dyslexia is a processing problem with language. This can affect different kinds of language such as reading, writing, maths , music, speech etc.

Dyslexics don't usually process information in the same way as other people.

Dyslexia is a different way of thinking and a different way of learning.

Dyslexia can affect people in various ways because the processing problem can be in different functions of the brain.

The dyslexic memory can be brilliant at mechanical and technical construction and design. Dyslexic mechanics have been known to look at an engine and quickly understand how everything is connected and easily see the best solution to a practical problem.

Many famous people are dyslexic:

Albert Einstein, Richard Branson, Gary Rhodes, Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, Joanna Lumley, and Tom Cruise just to name a few.

Dyslexia is often identified as a difference between your verbal ability and the written work you produce.

Dyslexics are often good conceptual thinkers so often they move into careers like architecture, design, engineering or computers.

Dyslexics can be very creative thinkers moving into jobs such as cooking, music, drama or media and the arts.

Many dyslexics have good spatial awareness and so may be good at games like chess or connect 4.

Dyslexics can also be average thinkers. They aren't always brilliant. You don't have to be a genius to be a dyslexic. Most dyslexics are average - like everyone else!

Being dyslexic does not need to be a handicap to anyone.

Dyspraxia affects the planning of what to do and how to do it. It is associated with problems of perception, language and thought. Dyspraxia is an impairment of the organisation of movement, in that the brain does not properly process information. This results in messages not being properly or fully transmitted to the rest of the body.

Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficultythat hinders the learning of mathematics. It may occur as a single specific learning difficulty for a child or it may co-occur with other specfic learning difficulties, the most likely of which are dyslexia and dyspraxia.
